NHL Draft Preparation

Interview

It's not about hockey

You're going to have an
interview with a scout from
an NHL team —
what do you expect?

"What is your favourite team?"

"What animal do you most associate yourself with?"

"How’s the season been for you? Happy with how you're doing?"

"Who is your favourite player?"

"How can you contribute to the team?"

"What player do you most associate yourself with?"

"If you had to choose between 50 points or 20 goals, which one would you go for and why?"

"Tell me about your parents. What do they do?"

"What role do you see yourself playing on our team?"

But before the interview, a scout must see something...

01

Skating: smooth effortless movements at high speed

02

Hockey IQ: quick decision-making, clever and unpredictable plays

03

Temper: displays a high level of competitiveness, resilience, and adaptability in any situation

04

Shooting: dangerous from all angles, with precision and deceptive release

05

Stress-resistance: remains calm under pressure while staying accountable

06

Puck Control: strong ability to handle the puck confidently in tight, high-pressure areas

07

Work ethic: consistent off-puck effort and responsible tracking back

Small tip:
Use the off-season to sharpen your skills—don’t waste this valuable time. It’s tough to focus on targeted development once the season starts.
